Malibu is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in Southern California - including Zuma Beach, Surfrider Beach, Billionaire’s Beach and Malibu Lagoon State Beach - where you can surf, suntan, hike, bike and run to your heart’s content. It is home to hippies and celebrities (and everyone in between) and just feels cool and luxurious.

There are a few hotel options (our favorite is The Surfrider Malibu* ) but we think one of the best ways to settle into the Malibu lifestyle is by staying in a badass rental home. PLANNING A TRIP TO CALIFORNIA?

We have Local Tastemakers in California that have amazing taste, know the Golden State inside and out and are ready to help you plan the perfect trip. Check out our Services and our team of CA Tastemakers to learn more!

Colorful Malibu Home in the Hills

Upon first glance, you will see this home's owner clearly has impeccable taste from the pops of color splashed on the walls and in the chic décor. We are vibing the outdoor wooden hot tub with panoramic views of the Santa Monica Mountains, a fully equipped kitchen and wine cellar with wine for purchase. With 1900 square feet, you will have plenty of space to spread out with a group and the master on the second floor helps the home feel even bigger.

The kitchen is large with modern amenities and ocean views and the secluded dining room is a great option if the weather isn't optimal. Otherwise, nature lovers can enjoy a glass of wine by the fire pit and amazing mountain views or utilize the outdoor dining area, which is perfect for eating and drinking alfresco on a warm summer night.

Canyon Cottage Casita

We are loving this gorgeous, modern style home with its textural touches and canyon views. See the rolling hills and sprawling Pacific Ocean through the French doors from the king bed in the master or from the quaint table on the patio where you can take your morning coffee or happy hour charcuterie.

This stay also has a cedar tub and outdoor shower, so you can live in luxury both inside and outside of the home. Due to its intimate size, this is a great place for remote work or a romantic weekend.

Classic Coastal Malibu Home

We love this remodeled home near Zuma Beach and Point Dume with it's coastal accents, bright, fully-equipped kitchen and spacious backyard with lounge chairs and an outdoor dining table. There is enough room to sleep a family or group comfortably with four bedrooms.

The main bedroom has a full bathroom with two sinks and doors that open to a private patio, a second master bedroom has a private patio as well and there is also a third bedroom with a queen-sized bed and a fourth bedroom with two single beds.

This home's layout and décor gives us a Santa Barbara vibe with the highlights being the brightly lit kitchen, lush garden and plentiful outdoor space. This home does have a 30-day minimum so it would be an option for an extended stay!

Tulum Chic Beach House

This Malibu beach house is oceanfront, just minutes from Carbon Beach and a short drive to the Malibu Pier. It looks like a little white bungalow with a bohemian vibe and we love the neutrally-toned furniture and an open living area. This two-bedroom home (one king-size bed and one queen-size bed) can accommodate four comfortably and while it does have air conditioning in the main bedroom, you may not need it with the cool ocean breeze.

Guests have their own stairs that provide easy access to a private beach, which is a huge plus in our book as most property with beach access in Malibu will cost you a pretty penny! They even offer the option to rent a luxury car from their fleet for additional fees if you want to loan a Tesla or Aston Martin for the weekend! This romantic beachfront apartment would be perfect for a couples getaway.

Malibu Midcentury Modern Studio

This stay is the perfect place for stylish, low key travelers that are visiting Malibu solo or as a duo. It is a guest house (completely separated from the main house) so technically not a home, but has a homey feel to it.

The designer touches are thoughtful with a smart TV, a sophisticated art wall, rain shower, floor-to-ceiling windows, concrete floors and Nespresso machine. This rental can go for under $400 per night so it's a steal for the area and appears to book up quickly. Be sure to reserve early if you want to stay at this popular destination!

Architectural Malibu Ranch

This Palm Springs-esque style residential home gives us all the retro feels with the cherry wood, funky textiles and high ceilings. Designed by architect Matt Kivlin in the 1960s, this Vrbo home has an artist's retreat vibe and is set up in the hills on a quiet cul-de-sac.

The garage has laundry facilities and a ping pong table (clutch if you're traveling with an active crew or kids) and all of the luxe touches in the bedrooms, including Aireloom mattresses, Brooklinen and Parachute home bedding and blackout shades.

You can soak up the amazing view off of the home's private deck and from the spacious living room, where you can see the Pacific clearly through the expansive wall of windows. This ranch style home is a great option for our hipsters and cool families looking stay in the 'Bu.

Modern Malibu Oasis

This rental home has been tastefully decorated with an open living space and well-equipped kitchen but we are really loving the home’s entire property for its plentiful outdoor hang space and sweet vegetable patch.

This home is the best option for a group that plans to spend most of the weekend hanging at the house as they have an outdoor picnic table for family meals, covered by a pergola to protect you from the California sun, lounge chairs, a fire pit and outdoor sofas for conversation with friends and family. Oh, and did we mention there is an outdoor shower?

We think you will love this bright, light humble abode.

Vintage Beach Bungalow

Walking distance to the beach, Getty Villa and Palisades Village, this cozy studio has a vintage beach aesthetic and plenty of fresh ocean air through the French doors and large windows. This stay is technically not in Malibu proper (closer to the Palisades), we thought we would throw it in the mix as there is so much to do and see just a short walk away from the property.

Seeing that the property is only 250 square feet, it feels more like a guest suite than a home but we think it's a perfect romantic getaway for a special occasion.

Cliffridge Malibu Hills Estate

This home is older but Avantstay has done a god job updating the main home and property and we love it's big glass doors, sweeping oceanfront views, full kitchen, pool table and the fact that it can sleep a big team of 8!

It has a nostalgic feel and plenty of space inside and out. This is a standalone home so there is free parking on site as well as street parking, which can be coveted near the beach in Malibu. Add in a cute little hot tub and plenty of lounge and beach chairs set up on the lawn and you’ve got the perfect setup to soak in those stunning Malibu sunsets.
